Meet Ryan Steadman

Ryan Steadman's paintings portray the rural rhythms of New York's Great Western Catskills. His graphic, spare compositions depict the family, landscapes, and animals that make up his daily life. Moving between expanses of color and passages of figurative realism, each painting reads as a moment held in suspension. Steadman pairs flat planes of color with built-up surfaces whose physical texture gives the paintings an almost sculptural presence.

About the Artist

I see my practice as ongoing experiments with paint that express the nature of being human.

Second Cutting

The second cutting yields the finer growth a field gives up once it's been worked, then seen again. In Second Cutting Rachael Catharine Anderson, Ryan Steadman, and Annika Tucksmith work rural ground the same way, revisiting the familiar to unearth the unseen.
