In Miracles No Miracles, a suspended, disembodied pair of jeans bears a flesh-toned inlay inscribed with the title. The work is pinned to the wall with a beaver-gnawed branch gathered from a dam. A concealed mirrored surface casts shifting reflections across the surrounding wall.

Combining cotton, fiber fill, acrylic, interference pigment, mirror, and found wood, Gast transforms familiar materials into a sculpture that is at once humorous and attentive to the mysterious forces of attraction.

From her research and fieldwork in Tierra del Fuego, Gast has long been captivated by the beaver as "builders and ecosystem engineers." The work reflects Gast's ongoing interest in "the strange ways bodies, regardless of gender or species, find and respond to one another."

About the Artist

Art must be done, on all scales and in every format. Take it to the streets and into the bedroom. Dress flashy. Make a banner, a poem, a joke, a monumental snowman.

Art helps us metabolize being alive right now.
