Christy Gast's sculptures often explore the unexpected relationships between bodies, materials, and the natural world. In Four Button Fly, four disembodied forms fashioned out of hand-sewn jeans are entwined in a continuous knotted loop with no clear beginning or end.
The artist imprinted raw denim yardage with plants and flowers gathered from around her studio, the botanical forms transferred through a labor-intensive process of bundling and steaming fabric with plant matter. The resulting surface records traces of the landscape while transforming a familiar garment into a floral camouflage that is at once intimate, beautiful, and strange.
