Disco Boot is a work boot encrusted with mirrored tiles and glittering objects ranging from freshwater mussel shells to rhinestones. The boot is from a pair Gast wore during peatland fieldwork in Venice while collaborating with the collective Ensayos on the Sphagnum Lab and is rooted in queer visual culture, where glitter and disco balls transform light into something collective. As Gast explains, dressing the boots in mirrored tiles was a way for them “to continue making shimmer, reflecting light, landscape, and the bodies moving around them."
The work is also informed by the teachings of Rev. Houston Cypress, a Two-Spirit poet, artist, and activist from the Otter Clan of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. “They connect shimmer, the play of light across the waters of the Everglades to 'protocols of Joy,’” Gast explains, "a way of moving through the world grounded in relationship, attention, and care.” Gast draws further inspiration from the poet Candystore, who proposes "shimmer" as a pronoun.

Christy Gast is a New York-based artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, performance, video, and textiles. Her work is rooted in field research and collaborative practices, as well as complex textile constructions.

Named by Algonquian tribes of the northeastern United States, the Strawberry Moon signals summer's wild strawberry harvest. The first full moon of June, it appears especially large as it rises on the horizon.
In this spirit of ripeness and transformation, Strawberry Moon brings together recent work by Christy Gast, Fabienne Lasserre, Halsey Rodman, and Molly Smith. Installed within a former dairy factory, the work ranges from large-scale sculptural installation to intimate watercolor paintings, exploring bodies, landscape, desire, and the scales of time.
