Christy Gast's work explores the entanglement of desire, attraction, and material culture. In Asses & Angels, she draws inspiration from the hanky code, the textile-based language historically used within queer communities to signal identity and desire through colored bandanas.
Using lightweight bandana cotton, Gast transforms denim jeans into a sculptural presence that twists, billows, and gathers with an abundance that defies logic. Gast was inspired by her studies of arborist knots and textiles in historical painting from Medieval through Renaissance times, where cloth often became a vehicle for wealth, fantasy, and extravagance.
Through humor and material invention, Asses & Angels invites viewers to consider how desire leaves its traces in the objects we wear, touch, and share.
